SWIMMING & SNORKELLING IN AITUTAKI LAGOON
A unique feature of The Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa is that here, you as our guest is able to enjoy all-tide swimming at the best swimming beaches in Aitutaki.
Encircled by fine, champagne-sand beaches, the private island of Motu Akitua is a water-babies delight – for the young and young at heart alike! Slip into the warm inviting waters of Aitutaki Lagoon directly off prime Sunset Beach beside the Flying Boat Beach Bar & Grill, and immerse yourself in paradise. Or better yet, take a refreshing dip directly from the deck of your Overwater Bungalow – what luxury! Before you, drink in the profound blue expanse of the world’s most beautiful lagoon, and marvel at how easy it is to become one with it as you loll, float, dive and dip within it.
You can also snorkel along Sunset Beach; please see the Activities Hut for your complimentary mask and snorkel, and flippers or reef shoes. A good snorkelling route is that from the eastern side of Motu Akitua at Uritua Beach down along the O’otu (Full Moon) Channel and as far as Kuriri Point. Because of the flow of water this area can be a very rich and rewarding playground for the snorkeller, and is especially recommended for experienced snorkellers. Here you can play with a wide variety of colourful reef fish, and there are often morays to be seen as well. Please check with the Activities Team before embarking on this snorkelling route for up-to-the-minute advice regarding currents.
Whether swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, windsurfing or outrigger canoeing, we recommend that you wear reef shoes at all times for your safety and protection from coral cuts etc, whether in or on the lagoon.
The entire area surrounding Motu Akitua is a traditional Raui, a protected Lagoon Marine Reserve. This means it is a DO NOT TOUCH zone – no fishing, netting, killing, taking or disturbing of any fish or marine life is allowed, including shells, shellfish, clams, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, etc.
If you see anyone breaking this sacred taboo, we would be obliged if you would please report it immediately to Front Desk or Resort Manager.
The Resort however does have a special dispensation to spear any stonefish found anywhere around Motu Akitua, and our experienced staff regularly conduct stonefish sweeps. Stonefish can at times be found within the Channel due to the richness of the food supply there, also making it of course a rich playground for snorkellers. Any snorkeller obeying the golden rules of snorkelling will be in no danger from stonefish, even whilst snorkelling the Full Moon Channel.
The golden rules of both snorkelling and of the Raui Lagoon Marine Reserve are the same – do not touch. This includes not standing on coral, as coral are living organisms, and standing or brushing against them can damage the tiny, delicate animals which make up the coral outcrop. It also includes not poking, prodding or overturning any marine life, rocks, stones, corals or shells.
When snorkelling the Full Moon Channel, please note it is essential that you wear reef shoes. This way you avoid walking in or out of the channel barefoot, in order to put on flippers within the water. We would strongly advise you against snorkelling the Channel without wearing footwear.
