The heart of Aitutaki Main Island is the historic township of Arutanga, home to around two thousand friendly locals and rich in culture, history, and community spirit. As the island’s main hub, it’s where you’ll find the Visitors Centre of the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation, located opposite the Bluesky telecommunications office and Post Office. The township is also the centre for Government services, including the Island Council, Police Station, and Court House.

Shops in Arutanga generally open from 8am–8pm daily, except Sunday, when only Neibaa in Vaipae and Payless Store in Amuri are open from 7am–8pm.

Arutanga is home to the oldest church in the Cook Islands — the Cook Islands Christian Church — a symbol of Aitutaki’s early embrace of Christianity. Visitors are welcome to attend services at 6am on Wednesdays and Fridays, and at 10am and 4pm on Sundays. Please dress modestly and bring a small donation for the collection. Maunga Pu & Pirake Lookout

For breathtaking lagoon views, hike to Maunga Pu or Pirake Lookout. These short trails start from the coastal roads in Anaunga and Amuri, leading to panoramic viewpoints perfect for photos. The only challenge is a brief steep section near the summit of Maunga Pu.
