The Cook Islands is one of the best places on Planet Earth for stargazing, particularly to see meteor showers.  From late April until late May, the Eta Aqaurid meteor shower will light up the night sky with up to 50 meteors per hour a few days before and after its peak.  Meteor showers are caused by bits of ice and rock traveling upwards of 44 miles per second entering our atmosphere and burning spectacularly and leaving glowing trails behind them.  The best time to see this meteor shower is just before dawn.
